Porsche PCM - CarPlay & Android Auto

The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system refers to the interface in the dashboard that controls the audio, communication, navigation and vehicle related systems in your Porsche. These PCM Units are actually extremely powerful processors and have evolved quite substantially over time to keep abreast of modern technological developments and Porsche have traditionally used numerical references to identify the introduction of these PCM upgrades. Spanning the Porsche models that we tend to specialise in, the PCM model timeline spans as follows,

PCM 3.0 - 2009 to 2012 - Porsche 911 (997.2 Series), Porsche Boxster & Cayman (987.2 Series)
PCM 3.1 - 2012 to 2016 - Porsche 911 (991.1 Series), Porsche Boxster & Cayman (981 Series)
PCM 4.0 - Introduced in 2016 and fitted to Porsche 911 (991.2 Series), Porsche Boxster & Cayman (718 Series)

Further versions of the PCM have since been released and introduced in later 911, Taycan and Macans, and at the time of writing, PCM 7.0 has just been released for the new 911 (992.2 Series). If you wish to find out which PCM version you have fitted to your specific Porsche, you can do so by accessing the 'System Information' menu on your PCM.

In our opinion the biggest game changer for these infotainment systems was the introduction of Apple CarPlay integration as standard on PCM 4.0 (Porsche 911 991.2 Series and 718 Series), although Porsche did not support Android Auto integration. Although this integration initially only supported 'wired' Carplay, later developments of PCM also now support wireless CarPlay too.

With the 981 series of Boxster and Cayman and the 991.1 series of 911 still being incredibly popular, until recently owners of these great Porsches who wanted Apple CarPlay integration have had to resort to replacing their PCM 3.1 units with aftermarket head units with the associated loss in OEM feel and integration.

Having thoroughly evaluated several options in the current marketplace, we now offer a service to supply and fit an Carplay 'piggyback' circuit board to the inside of the PCM 3.1 unit in 981 Boxster / Cayman and 991.1 series of 911. We have now fitted a number of these kits for our customers and have found them to be very reliable, very user friendly and most importantly - completely 'invisible'. It even supports the factory fitted microphone (as long as you have the bluetooth / telephone module factory option), steering wheel controls and BOSE surround system (if fitted). You can now place calls with Siri, navigate with Google Maps or Waze and listen to high quality music with Spotify, Apple Music or Tidal. The system supports both wireless and wired CarPlay and should you wish to use the latter, we leave a usb connection cable routed through to the glovebox at installation.

We can supply these CarPlay / Android Auto retrofit kits for both Porsche PCM 3.0 and PCM 3.1 equipped Porsche cars and we can fit them at our facility just outside Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire. They can be fitted (before delivery) to a suitable Porsche that you have purchased from us, or we can fit them to a suitable Porsche that you already own. We would require your car for around 4 hours (by appointment) and can even drop you into Stratford upon Avon town centre whilst we carry out the work.
